The Washington knowledge test

The knowledge test is a written multiple-choice test on Washington's rules of the road. You take it in person at an approved testing location.

You must pass the knowledge test before you can take the Driving Skills Exam (the drive test). Starting November 1, 2026, first-time driver license applicants under 25 must also pass a free online work zone and first responder safety course to get their license.

If you take an approved driver training course, you can apply for a learner permit as soon as you turn 15. Without a course, you must wait until you are 15 and a half to get a permit, and you cannot get a driver license until you turn 18.

If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must be with you when you apply for the permit so they can give permission online.

A passing score is good for 2 years, and you need to complete the drive test within that time. If you do not pass, there may be a waiting period before you can test again; DOL does not say how long.

A learner permit is valid for one year and can be renewed twice. After that you can apply for a new permit, but you must take the knowledge test again unless you are enrolled in a driver training course.
