Documents to bring

How to apply for a learner permit, and when you need to show identity documents in person, is explained on DOL's learner permit page; check it before you apply. DOL's pages do not list separate documents for the knowledge test itself, so ask your testing location what to bring.

For a standard permit or license, DOL accepts any one of these combinations: one stand-alone document; two A-list documents; one A-list document and two B-list documents; or four B-list documents, one of which shows both your name and birth date.

Stand-alone documents include a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a Permanent Resident Card (green card), and an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766). A foreign passport counts as an A-list document when it has an I-94, an I-551 (ADIT) stamp, or a temporary I-551. A foreign ID or driver license is a B-list document. The full lists are on DOL's proof of identity page.

Bring the original documents. DOL does not accept copied, scanned, or photographed documents, and may ask for more documents.

You also provide your Social Security number. If you do not have one, you sign a declaration saying so.

If you are under 18, bring your parent or guardian and documents that show your relationship, such as a birth certificate, adoption records, or school records.

These rules are for standard permits and licenses. An enhanced driver license (REAL ID-compliant) has a different document list.
