Taking the New York permit test online

DMV's permit test page says only that applicants under 18 can take the permit test online; it does not say whether applicants 18 or older can. DMV also still hosts form MV-264, "Online Permit Test Attestation for Applicants 18 Years of Age and Older", so we cannot tell whether adults can still take the test online; check with DMV before you rely on it. DMV's dedicated online test page could not be opened when we read the site, so the details below come from the permit test page and the forms.

A parent or guardian must watch the whole test. On form MV-263, signed in front of a DMV representative, the parent certifies that the applicant answered all questions without help and without materials.

After the test, DMV needs three business days to review your results and identity documents. Then you make an appointment at a DMV office. If you go to an office earlier, you retake the test there.

At the office, bring form MV-44, your proofs from form ID-44, and the fee; the parent or guardian signs MV-263 there. Every permit applicant must pass a vision test.

DMV does not state a separate fee for the online test, which languages it is offered in, or how long you must wait to retake it.
